a story lurks in every corner...

fingers of the hand

I love my work place. It was not always that I had this love for my work place. But whatever may be the reason, one of the very thing that clicks for me to remain hooked on to my work place from heart is the interest that place can generate in my mind—I mean, it’s not just the patients or the different procedures that we get involved with every now and then, given the nature of my profession (anesthesiology, critical care), but at times it is more importantly the people with whom we work that adds spice and flavor to the work environment. And for me, the environment matters a lot. I mean, I love it when I am able to connect with my work place and I think that holds true for almost all of us.

As for me, apart from work I love observing people and interesting characters, many times people who are labeled different from others attract my attention.

As an unwritten rule of the work place, everybody gossips. And everybody expects that others don’t gossip about them behind their back. But usually everyone always does!

At times we keep the boredom of work place away by gossips. Others may deny the allegation arguing that it’s just a healthy discussion that they usually engage in. Whatever may be the thing, admit it or not, we gossip and we love it (as long as it is about someone else)

At times a gossip may even turn philosophical as well and one may dive unknowingly into the divine realm of knowledge and understanding. Just like the other day, when I was done with my work and was waiting to go when the topic of discussion suddenly turned on to a departmental colleague.

I was having the conversation with close senior whom I respect a lot and we frequently discuss on a lot of things (study material as well as non study material).

As the conversation turned on this particular junior, we had a disagreement of opinion. It was said that a person is either good or bad. But like all the fingers in a hand are not alike, but still a hand cannot function properly without each finger intact and together, we need to incorporate the less achieving or rather lazy ones or the irritating ones together to make work go on. We I was not able to accept it totally. We cannot just say a person is good, or the other person is bad. We find the person to be good because we can fit in with that person, or that we can adjust ourselves with him or her. But the same person, who is good for me, may be a life threatening headache for someone else placed in some other situation. So for that poor person, the same human being who is good for me becomes the personification of devil!

So what I want to point out is that, if we rule out people who are 2 standard deviations out of the zone of normalancy or what we usually from the expression ‘normal’, almost all of us are a combination of good and bad. In fact whatever good we may try to be, or pretend to portray, deep inside everyone of us has a dark side.

And the same holds true the other way round as well to keep the balance perfect. Even devils may have blossoming lilies somewhere deep inside…

Quetiapine - New Drug of Abuse?

Many drug abusers have been recently found to be using atypical antipsychotics.

Many of them use these medicines to deal with the bad effects from the other drugs. For example, with opiates and alcohol, the abusers are often unable to sleep, and so use an atypical-antipsychotic agent to try and recover from insomnia.

Only about one half are prescribed, whereas the rest get them on the streets or from family and friends.

Among the various antipsychotics, Quetiapine is one of the commonest drug to be abused.
