World Press Photos of the year

Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda won the 2011 World Press Photo of the Year award for an image of a veiled woman holding a wounded relative in her arms after a demonstration in Yemen. In all, 57 photographers from 24 countries won awards in a field of more than 5,000 professional photographers, who submitted more than 100,000 entries.



Nature Singles winner: Jenny E Ross of the US, has won the Nature Singles with this picture of a polar bear attempting to feed on sea birds’ eggs at Ostrova Oranskie in northern Novaya Zemlya, Russia, on June 30, 2011.



Nature Stories winner: South African photographer Brent Stirton won the first prize Nature Stories for the 'Rhino Wars' series. The photo shows a female rhino that survived a brutal attack by poachers who used a chainsaw to remove her horns.



People in the News Stories winner: Yasuyoshi Chiba of Japan won the first prize People in the News Stories for the series 'Aftermath of the tsunami'. The photo shows a mother showing her daughter's graduation certificate which she finds in the debris.



News Singles: Tomasz Laza of Poland won the second prize in the News Singles category with this photo showing arrest of a protester in Harlem, New York City, during a demonstration against police tactics and income inequality.



Daily Life Stories winner: Alejandro Kirchuk of Argentina won the first prize Daily Life Stories for the series 'Never Let You Go'.



Daily Life Singles winner: Damir Sagolj of Bosnia and Herzegovina won the first prize Daily Life Singles for this photograph showing a picture of North Korea’s founder Kim Il-Sung on a wall in Pyongyang.



Sport Stories winner: Adam Pretty of Australia won the first prize Sport Stories for the 'World Swimming Championships' series.This photo shows divers practicing during the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.



Arts and Entertainment Stories winner: Rob Hornstra of Netherlands won the first prize Arts and Entertainment Stories for the series, '"The Sochi Project: Sochi Singers'.



Contemporary Issues Stories winner: Stephanie Sinclair of the US won the first prize Contemporary Issues Stories for the series 'Child brides: Too young to wed'.



General News Singles winner: Alex Majoli of Italy won the first prize General News Singles for this photo that shows Egyptian protesters in Tahrir Square after listening to a speech by then Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak saying he would not give up power.



General News Stories winner: Paolo Pellegrin of Italy won the second prize General News Stories for the series 'Tsunami aftermath'.



Portraits Singles winner: Laerke Posselt of Denmark won the first Prize Portraits Singles with this picture of Iranian-born Danish actress Mellica Mehraban.



Potraits Stories runner up: Ton Koene of Netherlands won the second prize Portraits Stories for the series 'Recruits at police training centre'.



Spot News Singles winner: Yuri Kozyrev of Russia won the first prize Spot News Singles for this photo showing rebels in Libya.



Sports Single runner up: Ray McManus of Ireland won the second prize Sports Singles for this photo taken from a rugby match played in heavy rain in Ireland.
